If police are called to the scene of your accident, they will likely provide some of the information you need to give to your insurance company, including the other driver's name(s) and contact information, conditions at the time of the accident, damages, narratives from the parties involved, etc. However, whether there is a law enforcement presence or not, it helps if you can gather the same information as well as a few other pieces of data that the police officer(s) may not gather or release to you.
- Other party's insurance information – company, policy number, license number, home and work phone
- Witnesses – to protect yourself from any unfair liability, you'll want witnesses who can back up your version of events
- Road conditions – weather, traffic conditions, visibility, and visibility from your own point of view
- Damage to objects at the site – road signs, culverts, structures, mailboxes, fences, guardrails, etc.
- Injuries – note any pain, scratches or bruises you notice in the days following the accident
- Other factors – speed, road debris, construction, actions of other drivers/pedestrians
Put together a checklist that you can copy and place in your glove compartment for this purpose. With any luck, you'll never ever need it, but if you do have an accident you'll be glad you were prepared with this tool.
