Don't Make These Mistakes after Your Accident

Sometimes there's no way for you to avoid an accident – they happen. But if you find yourself in a fender-bender situation, or a more serious collision, make the best of your situation. Avoid these common mistakes to ensure that dealings with your insurance provider go smoothly.

First, if the damages look serious, report the accident to police and to your insurance company. Many people try to handle a collision on their own, only to find they're missing important information or were given bad information.

Next, document any and all injuries and damage. That means reporting any bumps and bruises to medical personnel, and telling police what you know about how the accident transpired. If you refuse medical attention at the scene, at least visit your doctor for a checkup the next day, just to make sure you're OK and to record minor injuries.

Unless you're dealing with a very minor fender-bender, you may wish to get legal advice before making or signing a statement with your insurance company. An attorney can counsel you on what to say to make sure you're characterizing your situation properly. The same advice holds true if you're asked to make a statement to another driver's insurance company.
